OASAS Credentialing Timelines and Education Accreditation
NYSOASAS REQUIREMENTS FOR CASAC, CPP and CPS
The following pages define the educational requirements for each of the
three NYSOASAS credentials. This page explains the timeline and
acceptable accredited education programs.
Please call NYSOASAS 1-800-482-9564 or view their website at www.oasas.state.ny.us for further information.
Window Period
Education and training claimed must have been obtained within 10 years prior
to submission of the application. At OASAS' discretion, course work
completed more than 10 years prior to submission of the application as part
of an accredited degree program may be accepted, providing the degree was
completed within 10 years prior to submission of the application.
Accreditation
OASAS will consider education and training obtained through accredited
colleges or universities; governmental agencies; professional organizations;
training institutes; or in-service training programs. The ACNY ETS is an
official Education/Training Provider (#ED-0076-AL/SA).
There is no limit on the number of clock hours completed through distance
learning. However, OASAS will only consider distance learning course work
completed through the following entities:
Accredited colleges or universities
National Addiction Technology Transfer Center-approved distance education sponsors (www.nattc.org)
OASAS-certified education and training providers.
Internships A formal internship or formal field placement may be claimed as
education and training based on the academic credit associated with
completion, not the number of hours served in the field.
NOTE: A formal internship or formal field placement may be claimed towards a
CASAC for up to 6 months of the work experience requirement only. A
formal internship or formal field placement may be claimed as CPP work
experience OR education and training, but not both. You should calculate
the need to claim a formal internship or formal field placement as either
work experience or education and training.
Education Hours:
All education and training must be claimed in clock hours, determined as
follows:
Clock Hours = the actual number of hours documented for the
education and training received.
(Example: 9:00 - 11:30 AM = 2.5 clock hours)
College Credit Hours = credit awarded after successful completion of
an academic course. Students must document courses with transcripts reflecting
the course title, date, and a passing grade One college credit (graduate or
undergraduate) equals 15 clock hours. College courses submitted for educational
clock hours must be approved by OASAS as suitable substitutions for CASAC
trainings.
(Example: 3 credits = 45 clock hours)
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) = credits awarded after successful
completion of a Continuing Education course. One CEU equals 10 clock hours.
(Example: .7 CEUs = 7 clock hours)
You must maintain documentation to support all education and training being
claimed in the form of an academic transcript, certificate or letter of completion
which includes your name; the name of the educational institution or provider; title
of the course/training; date of completion; and number of clock hours associated
with completion of the course/training.
CPP applicants may claim a maximum of 30 clock hours for documented
participation in conferences by professional organizations.
CPS applicants may claim a maximum of 12 clock hours for documented
participation in conferences by professional organizations.
For the CPP and the CPS, documentation to support education and
training being claimed in Category I must be submitted with your
application.

or view their website at www.oasas.state.ny.us for further information.
There is significant overlap in the nature and categories of classes for the CASAC, CPP, and
CPS. You will see the CASAC, CPP, and CPS
initials and a Roman numeral following each course title; this numeral indicates the category to
which the course belongs. (Example: Common Mistakes of Beginning Counselors, CASAC IV;
CPP III; CPS III). This will determine the credential and course category that the class fulfills. A
course with no such numeral (e.g., CASAC Exam Preparation Course) may not be used toward
the academic requirement.

instruction, which must be apportioned among four distinct categories described
